Then I propose a duel.
A fist pounded on the door. Ripley glanced at me with tears in her eyes. She reached out and pulled me close. "I'm so sorry, mate. I didn't mean for this to happen."
"It's okay. We are fated to be together, so I have to believe we'll make it through this somehow." I kissed her.
She shook her head. "I'd hoped you'd never have to see this side of me. I hate it, hate what they've done to me."
I tried to soothe her, but the pounding on the door got louder. There was only one outside door in the cabin, and a very pissed off Manticore stood on the other side.
"Please don't hate me." Her sobs ripped my heart into shreds. I could never hate her.
The door flew open, shards of wood showering the room. A tall man walked in, fury burning in his eyes. I gulped, then fought the urge to step back. In human form, the guy was tall as hell, probably a foot over my six foot one. I don't think he'd skipped a single gym day in decades. "Ripley, we need to talk." His voice was deep and gravelly.
My mate stepped between us. "There's nothing to talk about. I tried that with you, and you dismissed my concerns."
Several men stepped inside the cabin and lined the wall, their eyes focused on the three of us.
"That does mean you go and fuck the first dick you find in the park you're obsessed with." Every step he took toward us sent ice through my veins.
"Stop!" Ripley yelled, putting her arms up.
Rhaspe remained where he was, but crossed his arms while his gaze ran over me. I straightened. There was no way I could out posture the guy, but at least I could be less short.
"He's my mate."
"Not for long." Rhaspe flashed a grin at me. My balls shriveled at the pain-filled promise.
"Tsigo, Rhaspe. He's my fucking Tsigo." That got his attention.
Rhaspe's gaze snapped to Ripley. "That's a fairytale shifter parents tell their kids to behave. It's not real."
My mate shook her head. "It is real. That's what I've been feeling every night when I fly."
"No, what you feel is a mating bond you've forced upon a human. Instead of pulling this innocent into your fantasy, come home with me. I'll care for you until the bond breaks, then we can pick up where we left off. I won't hold this lapse in judgement against you." He stepped forward with his hand stretched out.
Ripley let out a deep rumbling growl. "I'm not some poor helpless female that you have to lock up in a tower somewhere so you can protect me."
He pulled his hand back. The composed expression on his face broke. "I know you're not helpless. Hell, you've kicked my ass enough times that I know better. You're probably one of the most dangerous shifters I know, but mating you is the only way I can protect you. You're one of the last females of our kind.
